Pre-admission Assessment Tool Training

Carevia Pro+ interactive training

The training nobody mandates, for the decision everyone inspects.

Pre-admission assessment does not appear in the standard training catalogues. Managers learn it by inheritance, imitation and trial and error, and the errors are placements that fail. Effective Pre-Admission Assessment Training teaches the judgment directly: seven interactive modules with animated walkthroughs, in-depth reading, thirty scenario-based knowledge checks and a two-admission case study.

75 to 90 minutes, complete it in as many sittings as you need, and a printable certificate of completion at 80% or above.

Included with Carevia Pro+. Runs in your browser. Your progress and answers stay on your device.
Seven modulesFrom why pre-admission matters through triangulation, compatibility and the decision, to day one and beyond.
Thirty judgment checksScenario-based questions that put you in the manager's chair, with feedback that teaches either way.

The gap in manager training

The most scrutinised decision a manager makes is the one nobody teaches.

When a placement breaks down, the questions all point backwards to pre-admission.

Could the service meet the person's needs with the staff it actually had? Was the primary need within registration? Were the inherited assessments current and actually held? Was compatibility honestly considered? Yet the standard manager training catalogues cover safeguarding, infection control and CQC preparation, and pre-admission assessment is absent from them.

This training closes that gap. It is built for registered managers, deputies and senior staff who carry out pre-admission assessments, and it teaches judgment, not form-filling: what to read, who to ask, what to observe, how to test your own service honestly, and how to make a decision that stands up when someone reads it later.

  • Why pre-admission is where placements succeed or fail, and who an honest assessment protects.
  • Triangulation in depth: reading the documents themselves, asking the right people the right questions, and what specifically to observe on a visit.
  • An effective-versus-rushed comparison that names the behaviours, not the paperwork.
  • The four honest decision options, conditional admissions done safely, and writing a rationale for the reader who has the outcome in front of them.
  • What happens after yes: Know Me From Day One, the risk cycle, and reviews that read the evidence.

3 · Part A
Primary need, registration, staff skills and training gaps, handled honestly.
4 · Compatibility
What it means in supported living, residential, nursing and home care.
5 · Decision
Four honest options, decision-evidence mismatches, and the rationale.
6 · Case study
A tale of two admissions, traced through to the consequences.

What is inside

Training built like the decision it teaches: evidence first.

Every module combines a short animated walkthrough, structured reading, and knowledge checks that test judgment rather than memory.

1

Learning outcomes and timings

Every module opens with what you will be able to do by the end of it and how long it takes, from about ten to fourteen minutes each. The whole session runs 75 to 90 minutes and can be completed across as many sittings as you need.

2

Animated walkthroughs

Each module opens with a short animated walkthrough that sets the scene in under a minute, before the reading does the real teaching. Replay any of them whenever you want the core idea back.

3

In-depth reading, not slideware

Structured reading that goes beyond the bullet point: an effective-versus-rushed assessment comparison, detailed guidance on what to observe during a visit, the provenance test for inherited assessments, and how to write a rationale that stands up.

4

Thirty judgment-based questions

Scenario questions that put you in the manager's chair mid-decision, with wrong answers drawn from things real services actually do. Your first answer counts, and the feedback explains the reasoning whether you were right or not.

5

A tale of two admissions

A full case study module contrasting two admissions: one where a training gap was owned, dated and closed before admission, and one where a known gap was accepted anyway, traced through to the crisis, the placement breakdown and the paper trail.

6

Reflection for supervision

An optional reflection at the end asks one question: what will you do differently at your next pre-admission assessment? Your answer saves on your device and is ready to bring to supervision.

7

Certificate of completion

Complete all seven modules with a score of 80% or above and print your certificate, carrying your score, the date and the estimated learning time, ready for your training records.

8

Progress saved on your device

The training runs entirely in your browser. Your answers, progress and reflection are stored locally, so you can do two modules on Tuesday and finish on Thursday, and nothing is transmitted to or stored by Carevia.

9

Paired with the tool

The training builds the judgment; the Carevia Pre-Admission Assessment tool puts it to work on a real referral. Both are included with Pro+, and the strongest rhythm is finishing the training and then running your next real referral through the tool.

How it works

Seven modules, one sitting or several.

1

Work through the modules in order

Modules unlock sequentially, because the decision builds the same way: purpose, evidence, honesty about your own service, then judgment. Completed modules stay open for revisiting.

2

Watch, then read

Each module opens with a short animated walkthrough of the core idea, followed by the reading that does the real teaching, and key points you could repeat in supervision.

3

Answer the knowledge checks

Three to five scenario questions per module. Your first answer is the one that counts, and every answer earns feedback that explains the reasoning.

4

Meet Margaret and Daniel

The case study module puts everything together: two referrals, two assessments, two decisions, and two very different outcomes, with questions on what separated them.

5

Reflect and print your certificate

At 80% or above across all modules, add an optional reflection for supervision, enter your name and print your certificate of completion for your training records.

6

Then put it to work

Open the Pre-Admission Assessment tool and run your next real referral through it while the thinking is fresh. The training builds the judgment; the tool operationalises it.

Why it is different

The catalogues train the topics regulators mandate. This trains the decision regulators inspect.

Standard manager training covers what must be covered: safeguarding, infection control, health and safety, inspection preparation. Pre-admission assessment is not on those lists, so it is not in those catalogues, and the judgment behind the sector's most consequential routine decision goes untaught.

This training was built for exactly that gap, by someone who has spent two decades inside it.

Built around practical Carevia principles

Judgment, evidence and honesty work together.

Judgment over recall

Every question puts you in a decision, not a definition: the referral that arrives Friday, the gap that cannot close in time, the decision that disagrees with the evidence. Passing means you reasoned well, not that you remembered well.

Testimony is not evidence

The thread running through the whole session: a score quoted in a referral is not the assessment, a hopeful yes is not a plan, and a completed form is not an honest decision. Assurance comes from what you read, asked and observed.

Training plus instrument

Learning that never reaches practice is the training version of a lesson that never left the log. This session pairs with the Pre-Admission Assessment tool, so what you learn on Thursday shapes a real decision the following week.

Built for adult social care leadership

Development you can evidence, judgment you can use.

The training is designed for registered managers, deputies and senior staff who carry out or oversee pre-admission assessments in supported living, residential care, nursing homes and home care.

It supports professional development evidence by helping you show:

  • Structured learning on the judgment behind admission decisions, with outcomes, assessment and a certificate.
  • A reflection linking the learning to your own next assessment, ready for supervision.
  • Development that connects directly to practice through the paired assessment tool.
  • A shared standard across your senior team, when deputies and seniors complete the same session.
"Write the rationale as if it will be read aloud, later, by someone with the outcome in front of them."
From Module 5: The decision
Pre-admission assessment training in adult social care

Practical pre-admission assessment training for care homes, nursing homes, supported living and home care.

If you are looking for pre-admission assessment training, a care home admission assessment course, or structured development for registered managers and senior staff on assessing referrals, deciding honestly and planning for day one, this session is designed for that job.

Pre-admission assessment does not appear in the standard mandatory training catalogues for care managers, which typically cover safeguarding, infection control, health and safety and inspection preparation. This training addresses the gap directly, with content built around the real decisions: registration and service user bands, staff skills and training gaps, inherited assessments, setting-specific compatibility, the four honest decision options, and the person-centred planning that follows a yes.

It can support your development and governance evidence by helping your senior team answer questions such as:

  • Do the people carrying out our pre-admission assessments share a common standard for what good looks like?
  • Can our seniors distinguish an effective assessment from a rushed one, and name the behaviours that separate them?
  • Do our assessors know what to check before relying on an inherited SaLT, pressure risk or capacity assessment?
  • Would our admission decisions stand up if the rationale were read aloud with the outcome in front of the reader?
  • Is our pre-admission learning connected to the instrument we actually use on real referrals?

This is not a generic e-learning module. It is judgment training for the decision adult social care services are most often held to account for, paired with the tool that puts it into practice.

Data and privacy

Your learning stays on your device.

The training runs entirely in the browser. Your progress, answers, reflection and certificate details are stored in local browser storage on your device and are not transmitted to or stored by Carevia.

Complete the session on the same device and browser you started it on. Clearing browser data will remove your progress.

Important

This is knowledge-based training to support reflective practice and professional development. Completion does not by itself evidence competence to carry out pre-admission assessments: it supports, and does not replace, your organisation's induction, competency assessment and supervision arrangements. The certificate states this plainly.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get started

Is the training a standalone product?

Effective Pre-Admission Assessment Training is included with Carevia Pro+, alongside the Pre-Admission Assessment tool. The call-to-action on this page takes you to the Pro+ checkout.

Who is it for?

Registered managers, deputies and senior staff who carry out or oversee pre-admission assessments in supported living, residential care, nursing homes and home care. It works well as a shared standard across a senior team.

How long does it take?

Around 75 to 90 minutes in total, across seven modules of roughly ten to fourteen minutes each. Progress saves on your device, so you can complete it in as many sittings as you like.

Is there a certificate?

Yes. Complete all seven modules with a score of 80% or above and you can print a certificate of completion carrying your name, score, date and estimated learning time, ready for your training records.

Is it CPD accredited?

The training is designed to a CPD standard, with learning outcomes, estimated learning time, assessment and reflection, but it does not currently hold external CPD accreditation. The certificate states the estimated learning time rather than accredited CPD hours.

Does completing it evidence competence?

No, and the certificate says so plainly. It is knowledge-based training that supports your organisation's induction, competency assessment and supervision arrangements; it does not replace them. Competence is evidenced in practice, through your own organisation's processes.

Where is my data stored?

The training runs in your browser and uses local browser storage. Your progress, answers and reflection are not transmitted to or stored by Carevia. Use the same device and browser throughout, and note that clearing browser data removes progress.

For professional development and reflective practice purposes only. Carevia does not guarantee regulatory outcomes. The training is not legal, clinical or regulatory advice and does not replace professional judgement, competency assessment or official CQC guidance.

This training is included with Carevia Pro+ Seven modules, thirty judgment checks, printable certificate.
